Hawks Nest and The Flatleys

Saturday January 14, 2012
Last night, Friday, we had a lot of laughs at the St. Thomas Yacht Club, even after a day of total YUCK at anchor. I was VERY dizzy all day 😦 The winds and waves kept things spinning…I was afraid I might have Vertigo! Alfred Hitchcock would have had a field day. Then I thought it could be water in my ears from a great snorkel…or maybe I was getting a virus??? Who knows…but it was HORRIBLE…could it have been seasickness…how could that possibly be? Anyway, I was feeling better by nighttime so off to the club we went.
Carey, John and Victoria are coming aboard for a sail to Hawks Nest Bay in St John. It was a pretty windy morning and we even had a bit of rain. We ran to the store and got a few things for lunch and were on the water by noon. The weather changed to sunny and warm. We had a great snorkel off the cliffs and once again I came within 10 feet of a Barracuda! They sit MOTIONLESS in the shadows with their mouths opened. Needless to say I swam away quickly and didn’t make eye contact…it’s suppose to work with dogs so I figure why not try it on a fish. Our sail back was a little short lived as the winds died down. On the way we caught some huge wakes from passing ferry’s. Traffic in is area is unavoidable. So we treated our guests to our own brand of the Log Flume ride. Carey and Victoria loved it but John was relaxing comfortably on the trampoline at the time with his eyes closed and was DRENCHED from below! Good thing he was in his “relaxin” clothes! An approaching storm from behind us eventually caught up so John and I had to drop the mainsail in a bit of a “breeze”. We were only about a mile out of our anchorage so it didn’t effect our day. The rains came and went so quickly, but always at the worse possible time. It did stop in time for the dinghy ride back to the yacht club.
Once again John and Carey have come through for us by loaning their car for several days so we can do laundry, stock up for the next leg of our long journey, as well as pick up Penn and Brian at the airport on Sunday night.
A great day with a wonderful family 🙂
